Market Garden Manager

Fortunate Farm is seeking a Market Garden Manager as an Operating Partner for the 2020 season beginning March 1, 2020, ending November 1 2020. The position may be re-negotiated or extended pending review post-season. Fortunate Farm:

We are a vibrant agrarian community situated on the coastal prairie adjacent to Jughandle State Park and the beach, on unceded Pomo land. Our farm is home to multiple projects, including: regenerative grazing of heritage fiber sheep, cut flowers, you-pick pumpkins, camp sites, culinary and medicinal herb garden, flock of weeder geese, native plant propagation, land restoration projects, compost operation, honor farm store, distribution node for the MendoLake Food Hub, and a beautiful one acre no-till market garden. We are a dynamic and diverse community striving for ethical relationships between people, land and ecosystems.

Job Parameters:

The Garden Manager is responsible for all aspects of running an intensive no-till annual vegetable farming operation, including:

Crop planning collaboratively with the Farm Manager
Greenhouse management
Seed inventory and ordering
Planting and irrigation
Weed management
Labor coordination
Harvest management
Coordination with Sales Team
Occasional attendance at market or farm stand in market manager’s absence
Record keeping
Market garden tool maintenance and upkeep
Market garden work shed upkeep
Maintaining food safe working conditions

The Garden Manager works collaboratively with the Business Manager and Sales Team, and is supervised by the Farm Manager. They will be expected to lead work sessions with both experienced and beginning labor kindly and clearly.

Must be friendly and welcoming to customers and campers, willing to answer the occasional question, and direct people to the appropriate staff person when needed.

Must maintain the garden space and pathways in a safe and tidy manner.


Our ideal candidate has demonstrated success in a fast-paced vegetable farm operation and is curious, engaged and able to thrive in a dynamic and diverse community. Ability to take guidance and work collaboratively and also work alone highly desirable.  Desired qualifications include, but are not limited to:

2 years related experience in a lead or management-level position in a market garden manager or production role
Ability to safely operate small farm tractors and implements
Knowledge of irrigation system design, installation, and repair
Must be physically able to lift 50lbs repeatedly, kneel, engage in repetitive tasks and be outside in all kinds of weather conditions.


The Garden Manager will enter into a non-equity, Operational Partner position within the management team of Fortunate Farm, LLC for the 2020 season.  Garden Manager will receive a base $800-$1,000 monthly stipend (DOE). Farm Manager will receive a 20% monthly commission on vegetable revenue exceeding the monthly stipend amount.  Rustic, charming cabin is available during the season, with all utilities included. Pets considered on a case by case basis.
