Blue Leg Farms is seeking qualified, hardworking, enthusiastic crew members for the 2020 season. We are a young, certified organic farm located just ten minutes from both downtown Sebastopol and Santa Rosa. We cultivate 10 acres focusing on wholesale production of lettuce, salad greens, peppers, cucurbits and tomatoes. We also cultivate a small plot of flowers and various other market crops. We aim to grow the highest quality produce by nurturing our soils and the whole farm ecosystem through regenerative farm practices.

There are a few seasonal positions available, all of which will be joining an existing crew that is excited to work and grow together on the farm. Most tasks are done as a team so there are lots of fun times to be had! Days can be long, hot and strenuous so a positive attitude and strong work ethic are musts. We strive to foster our crew members’ passions and strengths on the farm and offer transparency on a profitable small farm business model. All positions have the potential for long term employment and this is an exciting time to join the farm! Note: we do not offer on farm housing.

Greenhouse Lead

Full time (35-45 hrs/week), April through October
$14.50/hr+ DOE

This position will work under the guidance of the Field Manager. In addition to fieldwork, responsibilities may include regular seedings, record keeping, management and organization of our germination chamber, propagation houses, hoop houses and baby greens production. This position is essential to the success of the farm and will require an individual who is passionate about farming and detail oriented.

Experience and Qualifications 

-At least one season of vegetable or flower production experience required
-Interest in farming as career
-Passionate about caring for baby plants and hoop house production
-Strong attention to detail and observational skills
-Plant disease, pest and nutrition knowledge/interest is a plus

Farmers Market Lead

Full or part time, Friday-Sunday required, other days flexible. April through November
$15/hr + market sales commission

This position will be the face of Blue Leg Farm at three local Farmers markets. This individual is responsible for leading the market crew in set up, sales and take down of the market booth. A friendly and inviting demeanor as well as the the ability to knowledgeably and efficiently sell a diverse array of vegetables is a must.

Experience and Qualifications

-Farmers market or retail sales experience required
-Must have valid driver’s license with clean record
-Comfortable discussing varieties of produce and giving recipe advice
-Enjoys upselling
-Ability to be detail oriented and to maintain a clean workspace
-Ability to lift 50 lbs and set up booth including tents and tables
-Quick math skills and basic record keeping required

Field Crew 

Full time (35-45 hrs/week) or part time, May through October
13.50/hr +DOE

Our field crew is the backbone of the farm. Daily activities may include seeding, transplanting, weeding, irrigating, harvesting and packing vegetables. The crew works with our management team to efficiently execute the daily tasks involved in farming. The work can be quite physical but the team environment makes the day fly by. This is a great opportunity to learn about small scale organic farming while earning income and working with a great team. The crew also has the option to work at farmers markets.

Experience and Qualifications 

-Previous production farm experience preferred but other fast paced work environment experience and desire to farm is acceptable
-Ability to hustle and thrive under pressure
-Ability to follow written and oral instructions and a willingness to seek guidance as needed
-Ability to repeatedly lift 50 lbs, bend, kneel, and work outside for long hours
-Reliable personal transportation required

Farmers Market Assistant

Markets are Fri-Sun, more days available on farm if desired, May through November

The market assistant will assist the market lead in all aspects of the farmers market. The ability to chat knowledgeably with customers while maintaining an efficient workflow is a must. Markets are typically 3-5 hours so this position could be a great source of weekend income without stealing the entire day. Assisting in markets offers the opportunity to dip one’s toes in the local food system and small farm business.

Experience and Qualifications 

-Customer service experience preferred
-Enjoy conversing with the general public
-Reliable personal transportation required
-Passion for local food and agriculture
-Basic knowledge of vegetable varieties
-Ability to lift 50 lbs and stand for long periods of time
