Blue Leg Farms is seeking qualified, hardworking, enthusiastic crew members for the 2021 season. We are a young, Certified Organic farm located just ten minutes from both downtown Sebastopol and Santa Rosa. We cultivate 10 acres focusing on production of head lettuce, salad greens, peppers, cucurbits, tomatoes, cut flowers, and various other market crops for wholesale and farmer’s markets. We aim to grow the highest quality produce by nurturing our soils and the whole farm ecosystem through regenerative farm practices.

We have seasonal positions and year round positions available, all of which will be joining an existing crew that is excited to work and grow together on the farm. Most tasks are done as a team so there are lots of fun times to be had! Days can be long, hot and strenuous so a positive attitude and strong work ethic are musts. We strive to foster our crew members’ passions and strengths on the farm and offer transparency on a profitable small farm business model. All positions have the potential for long term employment and this is an exciting time to join the farm! We do not offer on-farm housing.

Field Manager

Full-time (35-55 hrs/week), year-round
$19/hr+ DOE

The field manager works directly with the farm manager, owners and floral manager to oversee production of 5-10 acres of vegetables and flowers from crop plan up to harvest. Daily responsibilities include coordinating tractor work, irrigation, record keeping and leading a 3-6 person crew. Applicants will have extensive plant knowledge, a passion for organic agriculture, work well in a collaborative team environment, have clear communication skills and strong leadership abilities. A familiarity with intensive production models, small scale mechanization and tractor based cultivation is ideal, as is basic tractor operating experience. A person with the desire to take ownership over running part of a farm will thrive in this position.

This is a full-time, year round position with paid time off, an education stipend and opportunity for advancement. We are looking for someone who can make a 2-season commitment.

Primary Responsibilities:

Planning field tasks with farm manager and equipment operator
Record keeping of all field inputs, seeding, transplanting
Participates in both big picture strategizing and daily operational decisions
Oversight on seeding, propagation, and greenhouse management
Crew leadership in the field
Training new hires on field tasks and expectations
Crop planning for full season

Secondary Responsibilities:

Coordinating irrigation schedule with Equipment Operator
Soil fertility management
Some tractor field tasks

Experience & Qualifications:

2 seasons production farming experience
Extensive plant knowledge (seed, varieties, cultural practice, harvest, pest/disease, etc)
Organic Pest Management experience
Crop planning experience
Organic production experience
Leadership and communication skills
Bilingual in Spanish is a plus

Equipment Operator

Full-time (35-55 hrs/week), March-November
$17/hr+ DOE

The Equipment Operator will report to the Field Manager and is responsible for everything from primary tillage to cultivation as well irrigation operation and routine maintenance of our “fleet”. We use several tractors, trucks, many implements including a spader, mechanical transplanter, cultivation equipment, etc. Day to day work will likely consist of tractor work, irrigating, deliveries and maintenance as well as general fieldwork with the rest of the crew. Our equipment operator is literally laying the groundwork for the rest of our season and needs to be a dedicated, responsible, safety-minded individual with a passion for small scale organic farming. This position offers opportunities for advancement, year-round employment and benefits.

Primary Responsibilities:

Coordinate tractor work with field manager
Primary tillage and bed prep
Cultivation
Mowing
Driving the transplanters
Pulling harvest carts
Spreading amendments/compost

Secondary Responsibilities:

Work with field crew
Maintain care of our “fleet”
Loader work, including forklift
Driving farm trucks and small box truck

Experience & Qualifications:

2 years tractor operating experience
Comfort with towing and backing up trailers
Safety focused operation
Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
Familiarity with basic tools and equipment maintenance
Experience with manual transmission
Efficiently attaching/detaching implements
Experience with overhead and drip irrigation
Reliable personal transportation required
Mechanical skills preferred

Flower Field Assistant

Full-time (35-45 hrs/week), May-October
$15/hr+ DOE

The Flower Field Assistant is a new position at Blue Leg Farms this year as we increase our cut flower production! The Flower Field Assistant will play a key role in growing this operation with the Flower Manager. Harvesting flowers for farmer’s markets and wholesale will be the most regular task throughout the season. Harvest speed and efficiency can be learned, but will be essential for success. The Flower Field Assistant will also work on a variety of other tasks, such as working with Field Crew in maintaining flower fields (weeding, planting, trellising, etc.), washing and sanitizing harvest buckets, running deliveries, drying flowers, making market bouquets and wreaths, and assisting with floral designs for weddings and events. The ideal candidate will have experience in both flower farming and floral design. An individual who is passionate about growing flowers organically, is detail-oriented, and has an eye for visual appeal will thrive in this position.

Greenhouse Lead

Full time (35-45 hrs/week), April-October
$15/hr+ DOE

This position will work under the guidance of the Field Manager. In addition to fieldwork, responsibilities may include regular seedings, record keeping, management and organization of our germination chamber, propagation houses, hoop houses and baby greens production. This position is essential to the success of the farm and will require an individual who is passionate about farming and detail oriented.

Experience & Qualifications:

At least one season of vegetable or flower production experience required
Interest in farming as career
Passionate about caring for baby plants and hoop house production
Strong attention to detail and observational skills
Plant disease, pest and nutrition knowledge/interest is a plus

Field Crew

Full-time (35-45 hrs/week) or part-time, May-October
$15/hr+ DOE

Our field crew is the backbone of the farm. Daily activities may include seeding, transplanting, weeding, irrigating, harvesting and packing vegetables. The crew works with our management team to efficiently execute the daily tasks involved in farming. The work can be quite physical but the fun-loving team environment makes the day fly by. This is a great opportunity to learn about small scale organic farming while earning income and working with a great team. The crew also has the option to work at farmers markets.

Experience & Qualifications:

Previous production farm experience preferred but other fast paced work environment experience and desire to farm is acceptable
Ability to hustle and thrive under pressure
Ability to follow written and oral instructions and a willingness to seek guidance as needed
Ability to repeatedly lift 50 lbs, bend, kneel, and work outside for long hours
Reliable personal transportation required

Farmers Market Assistant

Part-time (Friday-Sunday markets), May-November. Opportunity for additional on-farm hours.
$15/hr+ DOE

The market assistant will assist the market lead in all aspects of the farmers market. The ability to chat knowledgeably with customers while maintaining an efficient workflow is a must. Markets are typically 3-5 hours so this position could be a great source of weekend income without stealing the entire day. Assisting in markets offers the opportunity to dip one’s toes in the local food system and small farm business.

Experience & Qualifications:

Customer service experience preferred
Enjoy conversing with customers and making sales
Reliable personal transportation required
Passion for local food and agriculture
Basic knowledge of vegetable varieties
Ability to lift 50 lbs and stand for long periods of time
