B-Side Farm Part – Time Assistant

Who we are:

B-Side Farm is a small, busy cut flower farm and wedding floral design business. We have three small fields in Sebastopol, Cotati, and N. Petaluma, and in the 2020 season the owner is spending considerable time building out a new farm site in Sonoma. B-Side sells bouquets through our Sebastopol farmstand, bulk flowers to select florists and wholesalers, and design for approximately 10 – 20 full-service weddings every year. Each season the owner employs 1-2 people to work part time on the farm, and a rotating cast of talented freelancers. We value positivity, hard work, thoroughness, and humor in ourselves and the people we work with.

About this position:

The part-time Farm Assistant will work largely independently to maintain B-Side’s three small fields, while the owner will be spending considerable time in Sonoma helping to get a new project (Haystack Farm, managed by B-Side) off the ground. The majority of your time will be spent in the Sebastopol location where B-Side’s mixed perennials are planted. This position is centered around landscape maintenance, primarily irrigation, wedding and harvesting, and is not a design position nor a traditional flower farm educational experience. The ideal candidate will thrive working in a solitary setting, able to keep up a quick and healthy work pace while alone in the field. If you’re looking to work hard in a beautiful and peaceful setting with a flexible schedule, this is the job for you.

Responsibilities:

You will work with the owner to plan and execute all farm maintenance projects across sites. Responsibilities may include:

  • Keeping plants watered, weeded and happy
    Maintaining a tidy farm
Managing and executing field tasks at each of our 3 established fields
Keeping ongoing list of immediate, mid- and long-term projects and to-dos
    Maintaining plant and soil health
Keeping farm equipment organized and stocked (fabric, stakes, netting, fertilizer, soil amendments, broken hoses/irrigation etc), and creating supply lists as needed.
    Replacing/repairing irrigation fittings/lines
    Harvesting
Bunching, putting flowers together for sales
Weekly local deliveries to 1 – 3 florists

Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years farm or solid gardening/landscaping experience, preferably in flowers.
Preference to applicants experienced in harvest and market bouquet bundling
Working knowledge of farm infrastructure (including irrigation and farm tools)
    Thrives working independently
Comfortable taking initiative and solving problems
Capable of working in all kinds of weather conditions (HEAT, some rain, some cold, etc)
    Self motivated, cooperative and flexible

Pay/hours:

This is a part-time 10 – 16 hour a week position, ideally broken into 3 short shifts throughout the week with flexibility based on the applicant’s availability and the needs of the plants.

Starting wage $16 – $18/hr  based on experience.

Additional Opportunities:

Extra Growing Space
As we’re not planning to plant annual flowers at the Sebastopol location this year, there’s a small field of about 6 x 50’ beds up for grabs if the candidate wishes to grow some of their own crops. Potential to sell these crops at the B-Side farm stand or through B-Side’s other outlets. This opportunity would come with a request for a bit of additional support to B-Side.

Additional Hours In Sonoma
If the candidate is looking for an additional day or two of work, opportunities exist to work for B-Side at Haystack Farm in Sonoma for a long shift or two each week. Work there would involve mainly weeding and harvesting annual flowers.

Freelance Wedding Design Work
Potential to join the wedding design crew for about 5 weddings throughout the season. Unpaid training available.
