Regenerative land-based community / garden / public guest season
We are seeking a truly wonderful live-in childcare support person who’s joy it is to hang out and play with our community’s small gang of little people, and who also has skills & experience in organic or biodynamic farming/gardening so as to help us manage our low-to-no-till 1/8 acre organic garden. This position could be for a single person doing both the nannying hours and the gardening hours (40 hrs/wk total), or it could be perfect for a couple with skills/experience in both of these arenas who would like to apply together (for two part-time positions).
We are located in Sonoma Valley mid-way between Sonoma and Santa Rosa. Ideally this position would right away on a trial basis for 1 month, then, with growing trust, joy and mutual fit, it would extend through the summer and at least until fall (either October or November) with the potential to stay on year-round beyond that as well. The included living accommodation is private and quiet, with its own entrance and outdoor area, but it is a rustic studio-style single room of 196 ft² so this position would be most ideal for either a single person or a couple, or *possibly* for just the right family with one small child who already love and live by a ‘minimalism/tiny’ lifestyle. Non-smoking only, and though we love ’em, no dogs (we have one on property who’s already more impact on wildlife than we’d like).
The kidcare component would ideally be for 35 hours a week over 5 mornings, 9am ~ 4pm, Thursdays through Mondays (Tuesdays & Wednesdays off), and would be with between 1-3 delightful preschool-aged humans. This ‘playgroup’ time would be almost exclusively outdoors and our philosophy and approach is very much child-led / attachment-based / gentle parenting / forest school / unschooling / village- and nature-based / Waldorf-inspired / free-range, etc. etc. We have an lovely and large outdoor play area established, as well as almost 20 acres to explore of mixed oak, madrone and bay next to open meadow and along an idyllic year-round creek.
The gardening component would be 5 hours/wk on average and self-scheduled when desired during the off-times from being with the kids. Our garden has about 1/8 acre currently planted (annuals and some perennials) with a total of 1/4 acre fully fenced, so there’s room to grow, and we are blessed with abundant water, weekly community gardening helpers and a truly one-of-a-kind location. Garden duties would include but not be limited to helping to plan out, start and maintain seasonally rotating crops (direct sow & starts); seed & supply procurement; helping with any garden planning & infrastructure improvement projects; gopher and pest abatement; as well as demonstrating & guiding community members or helpers with various garden tasks. Our garden feeds our community and, during the summer only, one hyper-local restaurant so far, but we’d love to see this grow in the future. The garden is currently managed by an amazing human being who will be traveling out-of-state from early May until the fall, so you would be under her guidance, learning the ropes from her and supporting her until her departure, and then have her support remotely when needed after that.
This position comes with onsite living, all-you-can-grow-and-eat garden produce, utilities included (electricity, water, internet/WiFi, trash/recycle), as well as access/enjoyment of all onsite community and property amenities as part of the package of exchange and reciprocity. The living space is a very quiet and private, rustic ‘studio-style’ room in a natural setting with a separate shared kitchen, full bathroom, huge living room, as well as a spectacular outdoor hot tub/cold plunge healing sanctuary area in nature. World class hiking, biking, nature trails and parks are within 1/2 mile to 4 miles away from us in literally every direction. You will need the use of your own car. We would greatly prefer the person/couple lives here onsite with us but we’re also open to discussing a different kind of exchange with someone who already resides locally but would otherwise be a perfect fit.
For this live-in exchange the reciprocity works out to roughly $23/hr for an average of 40 hours a week. There is a cash-pay portion of $16/hr as well the non-monetized reciprocity of the living accommodations, utilities, etc. There would be a trial for 1 month, after which the position would run at least until October (exact datae to be mutually negotiated). However, for just the right fit, a long-term, year-round stipend position could be available with room to grow and develop with our growing community project.
We are a family-oriented, tight-knit, land-based community with 7 humans currently living onsite year-round together (6 adults- 3 are elders, 1 child). We also have several others who live nearby that come regularly to participate in activities, service work, land tending and other gatherings. We generally spend our days working outside, playing with the kids, or working from home with our onsite business, and we enjoy sharing meals 1-3 nights a week, often with a game night sprinkled in here and there. We’re committed to tending our relationships and continually learning with regular practices such as holding councils, group meditation, study groups, self-inquiry and compassionate communication. Normally both larger community potlucks and simple social gatherings with friends are a regular part of our community’s heartbeat, but during pandemic times we’ve been fairly strict with our COVID protocols and have hunkered down especially in the last months.
We are a community that shares a deep love and dedication to both personal and community practices that support regenerative, earth-based, socially just, and somatic/trauma-informed healing. We have backgrounds in organizational development, biology/ecology, addiction counseling, hospice, dance, yoga & movement therapy, art & design, as well as music teaching, performance and music therapy. We’re passionate about regenerative economies as well as ecological and watershed stewardship, and we are committed to increasing equity & access, healing systems of domination and oppression, and centering diversity and inclusivity in all that we do. Our ideal long-term fit, especially if in-residence, would be someone who shares our values and would not only love to participate in many of our activities but would find them deeply enriching and a meaningful addition to their life.
