Current Projects

  • On-Farm Conservation: Farmscaping

Over the past two years, CAFF has selected and worked on 17 sites on six local farms where we are working with farmers to plant grassed waterways, wetlands plants and beneficial insectary native shrubs and forbs. Frequent tours and field days are held at these sites. Water quality monitoring on four of the sites is being conducted by the Coastal Watershed Council, and insect monitoring is being done by the University of California Santa Cruz Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems. This work is supported by the State Water Resources Control Board and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
  • Farm-to-School

Our Farm-to-School program brings fresh, locally-grown, and unprocessed fruits and vegetables into school cafeterias in the Central Coast. The project aims to improve nutrition options available to children while building stronger local markets for family farmers. Recent activities include farm field trips, farmer visits to classrooms, culinary instruction, and tastings of fresh, local produce. This work is supported by the California Nutrition Network (CNN).

Are you a teacher or farmer involved in Farm-to-School in your area? We created a manual just for you, so that the children you're educating can get the most out of their farm visit. Check out our useful manual: Making the Farm Connection

  • Buy Fresh, Buy Local

Community members are enthusiastically signing up to support the labeling and promotion of local produce and farm-fresh products through the Buy Fresh, Buy Local campaign. Local farm partners are using the Buy Fresh, Buy Local label in promotional materials, and CAFF sponsors seasonal campaign drives using local advertising and outreach strategies. Our leading retail partner in the effort is New Leaf Community Markets. Look for the Buy Fresh, Buy Local label where you purchase your food, and be sure to ask for local products. This work is supported by the Randy Repass and Sally-Christine Rodgers Charitable Foundation, the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County, New Leaf Community Markets and other participating retailers, restaurants and of course, farmers!

Who’s Participating?

Search our online Local Food Guide for the most up-to-date information on where you can purchase fresh and delicious food grown on the Central Coast.

Also look for the Buy Fresh, Buy Local label at participating markets such as New Leaf Markets, Deluxe Foods of Aptos and your neighborhood Farmers Market. Keep checking for new retailers, farmers and others.
