Sample Phone Script
Ask the receptionist to connect you with the staff person responsible for agriculture. If the agriculture aide is unavailable, leave your name, phone number, and the message below on the aide's voice mail, or, if necessary, with the receptionist.
- “I am a farmer from [your town] and I am calling to urge Representative ____to support several amendments during the Agriculture Committee mark up that will benefit sustainable farmers and strengthen local food systems in California. One is the amendment to expand funding for the Conservation Security Program, which will ensure that this important program is more widely available in California. I also hope he will support the amendment to expand the Community Food Project Grant program and make funding mandatory. More than 25 projects have been funded in California through this program that helps low-income communities meet their food needs while also helping farmers access new markets. Finally, I would like to see Representative ____ support $15 million in mandatory funding for the Organic Research and Extension Program. We understand that there is $25 million authorized for this program. However, if it isn’t mandatory, this very important program could lose all of its funding during the appropriations process. Thank you very much for your support on these issues.”
If you have the time, follow up with a faxed letter or email.
